Finding a Contact in Your Palm Address Book

If you took the time to enter a bunch of names into your Palm device, you obviously want to find those names again.

Here's the quickest way to find a name in the Address Book:

1. With the Address List visible, enter in the Graffiti box the first few letters of the last name that you want to find.

The letters that you enter appear on the Look Up line at the bottom of the display area, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Your Palm device figures out whom you're looking for when you enter the first few letters of a name.

If you don't like messing with Graffiti, you can press the hard scroll-down button at the bottom of the Palm device to scroll through your Address List. The Address Book can hold thousands of names, so if your list is long, scrolling can be laborious.

2. Tap the name of the person whose record you want to view.

The Address View screen appears, showing details about the contact you chose.

3. When you're finished, tap Done at the bottom of the display area.

The Address View screen disappears, and the Address List reappears.

If you want to make finding addresses easier, you can assign categories to names on the Address List. Then when you press the Address Book button several times, you cycle through the different address categories until you see the category that you want to use. For example, you can assign the category Business to some names, and you can assign the category Personal to other names. When you press the Address Book button the first time, you see all the names in your collection. The second time that you press the button, you see the names assigned to the Business category; the third time that you press the button, you see the names assigned to the Personal category; and so on. On the other hand, you may be completely happy keeping all your names uncategorized, which is fine too.

To assign a category to any name in your list, open the record for editing and then pick the category that you want to assign to your contact in the upper-right corner of the form. You can manage Address Book categories or define your own categories in exactly the same way that you manage categories of To Do items.

The Quicklist category is preset in the Address Book to make room for the addresses you use frequently and need to find in a hurry. You can use this category for the most important people in your life.
