DV is short for "digital video," while MiniDV is a tape format (a small digital videotape) used in the latest camcorders.
It's a video camera that records directly to a mini-DVD disc that will work in any DVD player. Downside? MiniDV usually has better image quality.
This feature keeps your shaky hand from ruining a good home movie, and is now pretty standard issue. Don't go without it, unless you're a human tripod.
